In early September of 1997, the Association for Social Knowledge at Okanagan University College created a new youth arm to deal with the growing concern over the position of GLBT teens in Kelowna and coming out in what many consider a hostile environment (such as high school). Rainbow Y meets monthly for "coffee with a purpose" in an effort to establish a social support group for queer youth up to age 25.

Safe Spaces is a youth based program that celebrates gay/lesbian/bisexual/2 spirited youth in Kamloops and the surrounding regions. We provide a safe space for youth to gather together and provide info on G/L/BI/2SP issues. Safe Spaces also provides a resource and information exchange, gay, lesbian, bisexual and two-spirited drop-in program, crisis intervention and direct support, an outreach program and awareness and sensitivity training.
